LEARN and PRACTICE the WORD of GOD

What is Forgiveness?

Forgiveness is the act of pardoning an offender. In the Bible, the Greek word translated “forgiveness” literally means “to let go,” as when a person does not demand payment for a debt. Jesus used this comparison when he taught his followers to pray: “Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is in debt to us.” (Luke 11:4) Likewise, in his parable of the unmerciful slave, Jesus equated forgiveness with canceling a debt.—Matthew 18:23-35.

Jesus tells us to, He suffered and died and was resurrected so that we could have forgiveness.

Forgiveness is one of the best definitions of a Christian. Mercy and grace help us to understand forgiveness. Mercy is not getting the punishment our sins deserve, and grace is getting the gift of eternal life. The shed blood of Christ paid the penalty for our sins. His sacrifice redeemed us and we have been forgiven.

Ephesians 1:7-8 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence.

There is power in forgiveness

There is power in forgiveness because it is introduced by the Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit spread it to His people.

Primarily, God gives us two very good reasons in Scripture for why we should forgive.

  1. Firstly, God commands us to forgive others.
  2. Secondly, those who do not forgive others indicate that they themselves have not been forgiven because a truly regenerated heart is a forgiving heart (Matthew 6:14-15). If we are filled with resentment and bitterness, we are exhibiting the “works of the flesh,” not the fruit of the Spirit which is evidence of true salvation (Galatians 5:19-23).

The secondary reasons for forgiveness are:
